What could you gain by giving up takeaways?

Whether it’s a Friday night treat or a quick midweek meal fix, we all enjoy a takeaway. But if you gave up your weekly pizza or Indian, you could be making a big positive change for your health.

Studies have found that in the average Indian takeaway there is 23.2g of saturated fat that’s 3.2g more than the guideline daily allowance for a woman, and 77% of a man’s GDA.

If you’re looking to cut down on sugar, you may want to think twice about getting a Chinese. There’s nearly three times as much in a Chinese takeaway as an Indian some dishes contain the equivalent of 19 teaspoons of sugar.

Salt is another thing to think about when it comes to takeaways. Some takeaway pizzas can contain your entire GDA of salt, as well as being high in fat.

If you don’t want to cut out the takeaway entirely, you can make some changes that will make it a bit healthier. By switching from pilau or egg fried rice to boiled, you can cut as many as 221 calories and 12.7g fat. Opting for thin crust pizza instead of deep pan is another good way to cut down calories. Thick creamy sauces will have the most calories and fat, so choose something with lean meat, veg and a tomato base for the healthiest option.
