This will cover the cost to repair or rebuild your home. This typically is less than the market value as it does not include the value of the land. Your current home insurance policy documents may indicate the rebuild cost, as will a surveyor’s report or mortgage valuation.

This protects the things you own in your home. For example, if you were broken in to and items were taken, or you suffered a fire in your home, this would pay out to replace your lost or damaged contents. It covers items such as furniture, carpets, curtains and free-standing white goods - for example, fridges, cookers and dishwashers.

No matter on the time, day or night, you can call us during a home emergency such as a burst pipe or a theft. We’ll help by quickly organising repairs by expert tradesmen and secure your home if it’s been broken into.

Buildings Accidental Damage

This applies to buildings only and covers accidental damage to your building such as pipes and cables, glass in your windows, sanitary fittings (e.g. baths, shower trays or sinks) and even putting your foot through the ceiling.

Contents Accidental Damage

This applies to contents only and covers accidental damage to contents in your home. For example, if you spill red wine on the carpet.

Technology and Entertainment Cover

This applies to contents only and covers most items of technology and entertainment against loss or damage while in or away from home.

This applies to contents only and protects pedal cycles against accidental damage, theft and loss while in or away from home.

Garden

This applies to contents only and covers your garden - from trees to garden equipment such as lawn mowers or patio furniture.

Family Legal Protection

Cover up to £50,000 to help and protect with legal problems including personal injury or employment & contract disputes.

How to claim

Before you get in touch

  • Switch off the electricity, water, gas etc., if this will prevent any further damage to your home, provided it is safe to do so.
  • Keep all damaged items which you are claiming for, as the claims handler may need to see them. If there is risk of further deterioration, take photographs of the items too.
  • Collect all paperwork that supports your claim including receipts, valuations, guarantees and instruction manuals. Photographs of items may help too.
  • Report theft and malicious or impact damage to the police immediately.

Aiming to make claiming easy

If you need to make claim, make sure you have your policy number and schedule to hand. All claims are handled by RSA, the underwriter of Benenden Home Insurance. You may also find it useful to have made as many notes as possible of any damage and any information you hold about the value of items, like the receipts for the items you’re claiming for — this will enable their specialist team to process your claim as quickly as possible.

To make the process as quick as possible, please ensure you have the following information to hand before you call:

  • Your policy schedule: It contains your policy number and the personal details you gave when you took out cover. It’s worth taking a moment to look at the cover you bought.
  • Your policy excesses: It’s worth checking your policy excesses; all payable excesses are listed on your policy schedule.

What happens once a claim is registered?

Dependent on the type of claim you make, it may be possible for your claim to be settled by the claims team. If your home or belongings require any repairs, it may be necessary to appoint someone to assess the damage. Once registered, a Claims handler will make sure you are always up-to-date with progress.

Explaining the claims process
  • Claim is initiated by phone – during this call the Claims Team will establish whether your policy covers the nature of the claim described.
  • If the policy provides cover for the claim, it will be registered and guidance given on the next steps.
  • The Claims Team will speak to you to establish the circumstances around what’s happened and the extent of the damage. Dependent on the claim type, the extent of the damage or the potential solution, they may ask to send someone to assess the situation. If so, this will be discussed during the call.
  • Options will be discussed and the best approach agreed
  • Estimates may be requested ahead of any work taking place and receipts or supporting documentation afterwards, to support the claim. Depending on the nature of the claim, the team can also put you in touch with authorised tradespeople.
  • Settlement paid or repair/replacement completed.
