4 simple ways to improve your posture
If you are reading this at a table, you’re probably sitting wrongly. If you are reading this huddled over your phone, you almost definitely are.
Slouching and bad posture are not only bad for your back, they can also increase the likelihood of depression, lower your energy levels and restrict your circulation.
Add all that together and poor posture is very bad news indeed – especially if you spend a lot of time sitting.The good news is that there are some simple and easy tricks for correcting your posture and improving your health.
1. Keep your ears and shoulders in line
When you are sitting at your computer, it is inevitable that from time to time you will lean too far forward or backward, putting your posture out of line.
Repositioning your sitting position so that your ears are in line with your shoulders will help correct your posture, and ensure that your neck and back are in perfect alignment.
Properly positioning your shoulder blades is equally important. Make sure to draw them back and down. This will keep your chest up and out, helping to prevent rounded shoulders.
2. Get a bit of help from some wall angels
Not the halo-wearing, winged type, but some specially designed exercises for improving your posture.
First, stand up against a wall with your legs spread apart and hold your arms up on either side of you at a right angle. Slowly raise your arms up and down. Do this at least 15 times.
You could also try some shoulder shrugs. Simply raise and lower your shoulders in a shrugging motion to help loosen you up.
3. Uncross your legs
The correct way to sit in a chair requires you to place both of your feet flat on the ground. This means you can’t cross your legs or stretch them out in front of you under the table.
Sometimes sitting with your feet flat on the floor can be uncomfortable. If that’s the case, put a small box or some old books under your feet to give them a bit of elevation. But don’t cross your legs, it’s bad for your posture.
4. Make a cuppa
Sitting for too long, put simply, is not good. Your blood flow slows, abdominal muscles weaken and muscle density decreases. It has even been shown to lower your life expectancy.
So why not get up to make a drink once in a while? This will help you get on the move and ensure you are properly hydrated throughout the day.
